Al-Intiqad, Ali Oubeni

The Arab League (AL) decision to suspend Syria's membership in the league is beyond legal bullying, said International law expert Dr. Hassan Jouni. In an interview with al-Intiqad online newspaper, Jouni pointed out that the blatant offensive against Syria and the clear war declaration against it is an aggression against the country and a barefaced interference in its affairs.

The expert said this act of aggression is very similar to that of July 2006 on Lebanon, when the world united to bring the resistance to an end through targeting the alliance between Syria, Iran, and the resistance. Today, Jouni reiterated another attempt to target Syria and shake it is taking place.

The Arab League decisions on Syria are illegal and legitimate, Jouni said, explaining that the League has violated its charter, article 18 in particular, which states that unless all the members agree in consensus to suspend the membership of a certain country, then it cannot do so.

Dr. Jouni further explains that the latest decisions of the Arab League on Syria are definitely illegal as article 8 of the charter states that "the AL should respect the political system of each state, and therefore should not interfere in any Arab political regime, not to mention the importance of building friendly relations with Arab countries."

As for the violation of AL to the UN charter, Dr. Jouni said that this charter proscribes the intervention in domestic affairs of any of the states, and assures respecting the sovereignty of the country as well as the right of its people to determine their fate especially when it comes to choosing its political system.

Also, clause 7 of article 2 of the UN charter forbids any of the UN committees to interfere in the affairs of member states. Jouni concluded that the current attitude reminds of the prevailing law of the jungle, which is in harmony with the US understanding of international relations that is based on targeting the sovereignty of states, and such is the case of the US fabricating conspiracies against Syria.
