Iranian-Lebanese Co-Production: “33 days” in Iranian Cinema

Hamed Nematollahi- Iran
The "33 Days" film entered the fourth week of its screening in 8 Iranian theaters with 12300 viewers and taking the 5th position of the box office.
The film is directed by Jamal Shurjeh, and is an Iranian-Lebanese co-production that was previously entitled "Heavenly South".
It tells the story of life and resistance of the people of Ayt-a-Shaab [a village in South Lebanon] during the July 2006 "Israeli" attacks on Lebanon. Egyptian movie star Hanan Turk, Kinda Alloush from Syria; Carmen Lebbos, Darin Hamzah, Pierre Dagher and Youssef El Khal from Lebanon are among the cast of the "33 Days" that has been fully filmed in South Lebanon.
Shurjeh was honored with the Human Rights Award of Tehran's 29th Fajr Film Festival for this film.
The film, which depicts the resistance bringing new hope to the people as it stood in face of the "Israeli" 33 day war and achieved triumphant victory, starts and ends with
two very emotional scenes, very true as well.
The movie begins...wedding preparations for two of Ayta-a-Shaab's citizens were taking place, and just hours before the ceremony, news was broadcast on the abduction of 2 "Israeli" soldiers, "Israel's" assault on Lebanon began..
The groom Youssef, is a resistance fighter, a Mujahid, and so he had to instantly leave and prepare for defending his people and his homeland, just like the thousands of other men, young and old who gave out their life for the sake of the cause.
Following scenes of battle and confrontation that took place back then, with the resistance fighters of humble capabilities achieving victory against the "Israeli" so-called invincible army, a new hope comes to light..
The last scene, is a baby born in one of the bunkers, his father had just been martyred as he was killed by the "Israelis", the family of that little baby celebrated the martyrdom of the commander, and the coming of the new born bringing along a new hope.

After having watched the film at Esteghlal Cinema in Tehran, Maryam, a 20 year old from Tehran, says "I hadn't any clear image about the war as I was very young then, the film opened a window for me to comprehend the brave resistance of Lebanese people, which was similar to our own one in the 8 years holy defense [against the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein back then]." She felt also excited about the start of the broadcast of the dubbed version of Al-Ghaliboun series in Farsi by IFilm as well. Al-Ghaliboun [meaning the Victorious] is a series of 37 episodes aired and produced by Al-Manar TV Channel during the Holy month of Ramadan.
Also, the series like the 33 Days film revolves around a story that was inspired from the popular environment in South Lebanon, the only difference is that it was about the emergence of the resistance in response to the "Israeli" invasion in 1982.

Mohammad, 24 years old, who studies Sociology at University of Tehran says was "I think that they could have done better in the characterization. They had to work more on introducing each of the main roles."
On the other hand, his friend adds "The special effects of the film were wonderful. Highlighting the human aspect of the war and its impacts on the normal life of the residents of the south is a positive point of it."
In a brief interview with Shurjeh, he told moqawama.org "Although the film was planned before the start of the Islamic Awakening, but our target audience was the Muslim World so we used Arab actors and apart from ten minutes in Hebrew, the film is in Arabic. We wanted to show them that through resistance, they can acquire their rights."
According to him, the film is set be screened in Egypt, Turkey and Lebanon after Iran.
