Lavrov: Sanctions on Iran Banks Breach IMF Charter

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov slammed the sanctions imposed against the Iranian banking system, stating that they violate the International Monetary Fund (IMF) charter.
"I think that the banking system situation breaches the IMF Charter, which demands that all of IMF member stated ensure uninterrupted bank services to trade and economic contacts," Lavrov stated on Friday in an interview with state-run TV Russia 24.
Also, Lavrov rebuffed the European Union (EU) oil embargo on Iran oil, saying it would be very costly.
"The EU is rejecting purchases of Iranian oil, even though very many EU countries depend on this oil," he indicated.
"One can say, of course, that the deficit will be covered, but (some) refineries are geared specifically to Iranian oil ... and readjusting them will demand substantial investment that the EU can hardly afford now," Reuters quoted the Russian Foreign Minister as saying.
Moreover, Lavrov stressed his country's opposition to additional UN sanctions and unilateral steps against Iran over its nuclear program.
"The unilateral sanctions to which our Western partners resort, bypassing the Security Council, only strengthen [...] those in Iran who are sure the West is not interested in resolving issues linked with non-proliferation of nuclear technologies, but is interested in regime change," the Russian top-official reiterated, with reference to the Western schemes against Iran.
