More US Sanctions, Iran Stresses Rights Ahead of Baghdad Talks

Iranian House Speaker Ali Larijani announced Tuesday that his country expects the West to change deceitful approach and modify its past behavior towards the country.
Larijani pointed to the upcoming nuclear talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, by saying: "the said the era of political games is over."
"Iran insists on its rights; he stressed and welcomed the realistic negotiations.
"Tehran pursues fair stands in order to settle the existing nuclear dispute, although the bullying powers follow the double-standard policies," he added.
Larijani considered it would be improper for the P5+1 to pose a cooperative gesture during the Baghdad talks, while imposing new sanctions against Iran.
The Iranian top official remarks came as the US Senate approved Monday new sanctions against Iran.
The measure was approved unanimously ahead of talks Wednesday in Baghdad between Iran and representatives of the world's main powers.
The bill allows US President Barack Obama to impose sanctions on any country or company that enters joint ventures with Iran to develop its oil or uranium resource, or provides technology or resources to help Iran with such development.
It also includes measures against anyone who provides goods that
according to US statement "materially contribute to Iran's proliferation of "weapons of mass destruction" program or its "terrorism"-related activities."
Earlier in the day, the head of International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano hailed intensive talks on Iran's nuclear program.
During his visit to Tehran, Amano said: "We had expansive and intensive talks in a positive atmosphere."
"We praise the good atmosphere of the discussions," the IAEA head said.
He further added that "certainly the progress of these talks will have a positive effect on Iran and the P5+1 negotiations. Of course these two issues are different from one another, but can underpin each other."
For his part, Iran's lead nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, also lauded the "good talks he had with Amano."
The upbeat assessments were seen as significant ahead of broader, more substantive talks to take place on Wednesday in Baghdad between an Iranian delegation led by Jalili and representatives of world powers in the P5+1 group.
