Russia, US Oppose Military Intervention in Syria

Russia reiterated Wednesday its rejection for any proposals at the UN Security Council authorizing military intervention in Syria.
In an interview with the Russian Interfax News Agency, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov confirmed that "Moscow repeated for several times its rejection to any intervention in the Syrian conflict from the outside."
"Any intervention would only worsen the situation and would lead to unpredictable consequences both for Syria itself and the region on the whole," he warned.
Gatilov urged all sides to support "broader international discussion on settling standoff in Syria and Kofi Annan's, the UN Envoy to Syria, six-point plan. "
The Russian official added that "his country thinks that any new UN Security Council pressure measures on Syria are premature," and asserted that "Moscow will veto initiatives on foreign military interference in Syrian situation in UN Security Council."
Gatilov declared that Russia does not exclude a new mechanism for supervising the implementation of Annan's plan, citing the necessity for allowing Anna's plan implementation the needed opportunity.
He further called on all foreign players, including the western ones, to put pressure on the opposition.
The Russian position came hours after the United States ruled out any military move against Damascus.
"We do not believe that militarization, further militarization of the situation in Syria at this point is the right course of action," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.
"We believe that it would lead to greater chaos, greater carnage," Carney warned.
Pentagon spokesman George Little said Tuesday that those remarks did not mean the US had backed off its position that military intervention risks doing more harm than good.
"The Pentagon has not been asked to provide plans for military options in Syria," Little said.
He also stressed that "the focus remains on the diplomatic and economic track."
"But at the end of the day, we in the Department of Defense have a responsibility to look at the full spectrum of options and to make them available if they're requested," Little added.
