Lavrov: Regime Change in Syria Leads to Catastrophe
Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated on Wednesday that the change of [Bashar] al-Assad regime in Syria, would lead to catastrophe.
Speaking to reporters in Beijing in light of Russian President Vladimir Putin's meetings with Chinese leaders, Lavrov said, "[Opposition groups] outside Syria appeal to the world community more and more to bomb al-Assad regime's, in order to change this regime."
"This is very risky, I would even say it is a way that will lead the region to catastrophe," Lavrov confirmed.
On the same level, Lavrov asserted that, together with China, Russia will push forward UN-Arab Special Envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan for Syria.
"We confirmed that we will coordinate our actions on Syria, and that the main thing right now is to carry out Annan's plan, and the UN Security Council resolution," the senior Russian official went on to say.
Moreover, Lavrov stressed the importance of holding a broad international meeting on Syria, in presence of Iran and Turkey, in order to stage support to Annan's peace plan, further rebuffing any military action against Syria.
