Syrian President Bashar al-Assad president exhorted his armed forces Wednesday to restore stability to the nation. "The army is engaged in a crucial and heroic battle... on which the destiny of the nation and its people rests," he confirmed.
Al-Assad further clarified that "the fate of our people and our nation, past, present and future, hinges on this battle."
In a written statement marking the anniversary of the army's foundation, al-Assad stressed that "the enemy has become among us, using agents at home as a bridge to strike at the nation's stability, undermine the citizens' security and continue to deplete our economic resources."
"They [the enemy] wanted to deprive the people of their national decision... but they were astonished to see these proud people, who confronted their plans and defeated them," he emphasized.
Al-Assad voiced confidence in the army that had proved "through confronting the terrorist criminal gangs throughout the past period that you have steely resolve and conscience, and that you are the trustees of the people's values."
"My trust in you is great, and the trust of our people in you that you are ... the defender of its just causes," al-Assad said in comments which the state news agency SANA said were published in Syria's armed forces magazine.
"You men of the country... you have demonstrated, in dealing with the war waged against our country by the terrorist gangs, that you possess an iron will and a keen awareness," he reiterated.
The Syrian President concluded that "the military remains the backbone of the motherland."
