Iranian Foreign Minister: Iran to unveil Syria proposal at NAM summit

Iran "has a proposal regarding Syria which it will discuss with countries taking part in the NAM summit," said Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi.

Less than a week before the start of the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran, Salehi was the guest of an weekly television where he added "This proposal is an acceptable and rational one, and includes all parties, and opposing it will be very difficult".

Salehi expressed renewed backing for Damascus saying that Tehran's more than three-decade alliance with Damascus was a "fundamental" for Iranian foreign policy as Assad's regime was "an essential element of resistance against "Israel"." "We are not ready to abandon this policy," he said.
About the summit due to take place 26-31 August he said "We haven't had such an event before and after the revolution. It will be a milestone -especially in a situation that attacks towards our country has intensified and there are pressures in form of sanctions. The Islamic Republic has been able to show it's abilities in the international arena with its empowerment and esteem and play a significant role."
The Iranian foreign minister added "A lot of Western countries have advised not to participate in this summit but NAM's members are not paying attention to them and representatives from 120 countries will attend the summit in Tehran."
Salehi emphasized that through diplomatic activities they have countered that efforts and till now, about 50 head of states, including presidents, vice-presidents and prime ministers have announced their participation.


He confirmed the presence of Egyptian president Mohamamd Mursi, North Korean president, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. Salehi added that the vice foreign minister of Saudi Arabia who's the king's son will be the country's special envoy.
Russia will be one of the special guests of the summit and consultations are underway to have higher degree of participation by them.
The foreign minister said that at the sideline of the summit, bilateral and multilateral meetings will be organized to discuss different issues to strengthen the relations.


He expressed hope that in the three years of presidency of Iran over NAM, "with the help of a strategic committee, we will be able to draft effective proposals that will be ratified by the other members."


Salehi announced the Supreme Leader will give a speech in the opening ceremony.
He expressed hope that with restructuring the Movement based on its 10 principles, "NAM will have a more significant role in the International arena and manage the world challenges in a way to defend its members' interests."
Salehi added that NAM's Coordination Office in New York should be more active in the drafting of a new structure for the UN.
