Makdissi: Mursi’s Speech Disappointing, UN Envoy Soon in Syria

"Egypt's president is too new in his post and doesn't fully understand Syrian politics," Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told Lebanese channel NBN.
"We heard the words of President Mursi. If I may say so, it was a disappointment," he said.
Makdissi further stressed "I think the new Egyptian presidency is not fully developed yet. In my personal view, his dose of reality will increase with the passing of time. We hope that he will be able to reach an understanding of the whole truth of what is happening in Syria, and to take a position at that level."
"As for President Mursi, we all know that he has a Muslim Brotherhood background," Makdissi told NBN.
But he is now president of a crucial Arab country, Egypt.
Now, despite his Brotherhood background, he now has a relationship with important institutions in Egypt, such as the ministry of foreign affairs," he added.
"Syria hopes that Egypt recovers its natural role in the Arab world," the Syrian official said.
He further revealed that "newly appointed international peace envoy Lakhdar Ibrahimi is due to arrive in Syria soon."
"We will listen to him and he will listen to us," Makdissi clarified.
Makdissi blamed the international community for the ongoing conflict.
"The issue is not personal, and has nothing to do with the envoy," said Makdissi and noted that : "We tried Mr. Kofi Annan. And all the reasons that led to his initiative's unhappy ending were not Syrian. The main reason was a lack of international consensus."
Echoing the regime's persistent blaming of Western countries for the crisis, Makdissi went on to blame "powerful UN Security Council members for discouraging dialogue in Syria."
