Salehi Meets Assad: Syria Crisis Must be Solved by Syrians

The Iranian FM, who was speaking at Damascus airport before the meeting with President Bashar Assad and other senior officials, said this should be done in "partnership with international and regional organizations."
Salehi said "Syria is facing a problem, and we hope that this problem can be solved as soon as possible," adding that "Syria has very strong, solid ties with Iran, especially at the political level," and that he would discuss the conflict with Syrian officials.

Salehi, held talks with his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem before meeting Assad, and called this week for a simultaneous halt in violence by both sides and insisted on a peaceful solution without foreign intervention.
Meeting the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday in the Syrian capital Damascus, the two sides discussed bilateral, regional and international issues as well as the Syrian crisis.

Salehi reiterated to al-Assad that security and peace will be restored in Syria via a "diplomatic Syria-Syria solution" which is based on national talks between the Syrian government and the opposition without any foreign intervention and arming of the extremist groups as well as by putting an end to violence.

The Syrian President for his part, expressed gratitude to Iran for its honest efforts to solve Syria's problem, noting that Damascus welcomes any balanced, fair and reasonable plan or solution which would serve the interests of the Syrian nation.
Salehi's visit comes two days after a meeting in Cairo on Monday of the contact group on Syria, which includes Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
Salehi had proposed in the Cairo talks that the four countries dispatch observers to Syria in an effort to control the violence.
