BEIRUT--Hizbullah accused the Zionist regime of assassinating its Military Commander Imad Moghnieh who was martyred by a bomb blast in Damascus, the Lebanese group said on Wednesday.
Moghnieh was head of the Hizbullah resistance branch during Lebanon- "Israel" war in 2006.
Moghnieh, 45, was martyred late on Tuesday. He had long been on a list of "Israel" wanted to kill or apprehend and the United States had offered a reward for his capture.
Hizbullah announced Moghnieh's martyrdom and accused the "Israeli" occupation regime of his assassinating.
Hizbullah called Lebanese peoples to his funeral on Thursday.
Following Imad Moghnieh Martyrdom, Hizbullah said in a statement: With pride and honor, we announce the martyrdom of a great resistance commander who joined the procession of Islamic Resistance martyrs.
After a life full of Jihad, sacrifices and accomplishments lived with a longing to martyrdom, Islamic Resistance commander Hajj Imad Moghnieh (Hajj Radwan) was assassinated by "Israeli" criminal hands.
The martyr, may his soul rest in peace, had been a target for the Zionists for more than 20 years.
Hizbullah pledged to continue the martyr's path until achieving complete victory.
Hizbullah followers fanned onto Lebanese streets to mourn him.
Mognieh's brothers Jihad and Fouad, have also been martyred in car bombings, in 1984 and 1995.
"Down with "Israel" ... Down with America," shouted Lebanese peoples in the village of Tayr Diba where he came from, east of the southern port city of Tyre.
In Gaza City, the Palestinian Hamas movement accused the Zionist regime Wednesday of being behind the assassination of top Hizbullah leader Imad Moghnieh.
Other Palestinian resistance factions too blamed "Israel" for and condemned the attack of Hizbullah's number two.
"The stamp of the criminal ("Israeli" War Minister Ehud Barak) is on this cowardly operation, for which, he will personally pay a heavy price," said the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of Fatah movement.
The Islamic Jihad said in a statement Mugniyah's death "is not only a loss for Hizbullah and the Lebanese, but also loss for the Palestinian people and Arab nation."
Former Mossad head, Danny Yatom said on "Israel" Radio," He was not only being targeted by "Israel", but also by the Americans and many other parties."
"Moghnieh had been a very tough target to track." He said, describing his death as a severe blow to Hizbullah.
"He behaved with extreme caution for many years. It was impossible even to obtain his picture. He never appeared or spoke before the media. His identity was hidden. His steps were hidden. He behaved with extreme caution, and that was the reason it was difficult to get to him for so many years," Danny Yatom said.
Meanwhile, "Israeli" Environment Minister Gideon Ezra, a former director of "Israel's" domestic security agency Shin Beth, welcomed the news.
