Former Mossad chief in Beirut Eliezer Tsafrir said that the assassination of Hizbullah's top security official, Imad Mognieh, must have required years of information gathering by tens of agents.
Tsafrir, who retired in 1992, said that Mossad agents were aware of Mugniyah's existence in the early 1980s, after the 1982 "Israeli" invasion.
"Mossad agents were surprised by Mognieh's tactics," he said, referring to the widespread use of self-sacrifice bombers.
He also noted that Mugniyah's name was raised in connection with the Mossad's search for "Israeli" pilot Ron Araad.
"Despite the fact that 'Israel' and the US are the main suspects in Mugniyah's assassination, countries like France, Germany and Saudi Arabia had unsettled scores with him," Tsafrir said.
"His assassination was a complicated intelligence operation that required years of work and months of planning," he added.
Tsafrir said that the agents who carried out Mugniyah's assassination were either recruited from Syria, infiltrated into it, or both.
"Tens of agents definitely worked on Mognieh's assassination. No one of them is aware of the others' existence or their tasks," he added.
