Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned Friday "there are reports that some third countries are training Syrian rebels to use chemical weapons in Afghanistan."
"The intention is to put the skill to use in new false flag actions in Syria," he explained, and pointed out that "the suspected training happened in Afghan territories not under control of the government in Kabul."
He further stated "reports indicate that al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front is planning to smuggle toxic compounds and relevant specialists into Iraqi territory to stage terrorist attacks there this time."
Speaking at the 8th East Asia Summit in Brunei Lavrov called to go ahead with convening a conference on Syria.
"The longer we hesitate the stronger the adherents of radical Islam will grow in Syria. They have already announced their aim to establish a Sharia-based coalition and caliphate in Syria and around it," the Russian FM said.
Lavrov extended gratitude to all those who support the Russian-US initiative to convene a Geneva-2 conference. He said that Russia will spare no effort pressing for a speedy convocation of this conference but admitted that there is still no unity in the ranks of the Syrian opposition.
He stressed that Russia appreciates the support of all the participants in the summit who spoke in favor of the Russian-US initiative to dispose of chemical weapons in Syria.
Lavrov added that Russia spares no effort in guaranteeing Syria's continued cooperation with inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
On the Iranian front, he said that Russia expects the Iranian problem to get off the ground.
Lavrov agreed with his counterparts about the current good prospects for stepping up activities in respect of the Iranian nuclear program.
He reminded the audience about the forthcoming ‘three plus two' meeting on Iran. Lavrov stressed that the new Iranian leadership's position gives reason to believe that this issue can really be set in motion.
