Egypt University Expels 76 Students for Protesting

The decision had been made after "the investigation proved the students took part in activities which violate university regulations," MENA news agency reported on Sunday.

36 female students from the university's branch in the Nile Delta city of Zagazig were among those expelled by Al-Azhar authorities, the source added.
Al-Azhar has been the scene of anti-government protests with continuous clashes between security forces and students.

Numerous Al-Azhar students have been tried for opposing Egypt's the military-backed judiciary, with dozens sentenced for involvement in clashes with police.
Recently, an Egyptian court sentenced hundreds of members and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood to death, including its leader Mohamed Badie.

Egyptian police forces have widely been accused by rights groups of heavy handedness and random arrests during the confrontations with students.
