Twin Suicide Blasts in Nigeria Kills Dozens

The detonation of two vehicle bombs within half an hour seemed calculated to exact maximum casualties. Although the tactic of such attacks has been used in Iraq and other countries, it was the first attack of its kind in Nigeria.

Witnesses reported that many of the emergency workers were caught up in the second blast. "Scores died. Mostly women," Pam Ayuba, spokesman for Plateau state's Governor Jonah Jang, said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. But the militants of Boko Haran group, which has set off bombs across the north and center of Nigeria, was likely to be responsible for this attack.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the blasts, calling the perpetrators "cruel and evil."

"The government remains fully committed to winning the war against terror, and this administration will not be cowed by the atrocities of enemies of human progress and civilization," he further confirmed.
