A Briton man will be sentenced for the first time after having planned to join the conflict in Syria, as he has been convicted of a terror offence, according to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The Kingston Crown Court on Tuesday has for the first time convicted a British man of terrorism-related offenses with the intention of joining militant groups fighting in Syria.

Prosecutors charged that Mashudur Choudhury went to Syria in October intending to join a terrorism training camp.

He was arrested on his return to London later that month [October].
Choudhury will be sentenced on June 13.

Police sources said they were given information from within the community that Choudhury is one of at least five men from Portsmouth who travelled out to the conflict last October.

The men allegedly decided to go out to training camps after another associate, Iftekhar Jaman had travelled to fight along the so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" [ISIL] earlier last year [2013]. He was killed in December fighting with "ISIL" shortly after he had given an interview to BBC Newsnight.

Officials fear that hundreds of Britons have traveled to Syria to join the fighting there and may bring terrorism back to Britain when they return.
