France Intensifies Raids on ’ISIS’ Positions in Syria

French fighter jets launched their biggest raids in Syria to date targeting the "ISIS" stronghold in Raqqa just two days after the group claimed coordinated attacks in Paris that killed more than 130 people, the defense ministry said.
France has been bombing positions in Iraq and Syria for months as part of a US-led operation. Following Friday's mayhem, Paris vowed to destroy the group.
"The raid ... including 10 fighter jets, was launched simultaneously from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Twenty bombs were dropped," the statement said, adding that the mission had taken place on Sunday evening.
The operation, carried out in coordination with US forces, struck a command center, recruitment center for extremists, a munitions depot and a training camp for fighters, it said.
There was no immediate word on casualties or the damage inflicted.
"The first target destroyed was used by Daesh as a command post, recruitment center and arms and munitions depot. The second held a terrorist training camp," a ministry statement said, adding that in total some 20 bombs were dropped in the raid.
France had the "legitimacy" to conduct airstrikes in Raqqa against "ISIS", the French foreign minister Laurent Fabius said on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Turkey.
The air raid was a "political" decision, he said which shows that France is "present and active" following Friday's attacks.
