The Russian Defense Ministry announced that a Russian Su-24 fighter has been shot down in Syria, adding that the plane didn't violate Turkish airspace and was at an altitude of 6 kilometers.
The source added that the pilots managed to eject from the downed jet, and separate footage showed them parachuting out before the crash. However, their fate is as yet unknown.
Numerous witnesses wrote on social media, saying thick plumes of smoke have been rising from the jet crash site.
In parallel, a Turkish military official claimed that the jet was warned before being targeted, adding the plane was shot down by Turkish F-16 fighter jets.
Furthermore, the plane reportedly crashed in a village mostly populated by Syrian Turkmen.
Some reports citing local sources mentioned that one of the pilots was in the hands of Turkmen forces in Syria as they were searching for the other pilot.
"During the flight, the aircraft was flying within the borders of Syria, which was registered by objective monitoring data," the Russian Interior ministry said, adding that the aircraft was "supposedly shot down from the ground."
