The French Retreat: Syrian Gov’t might Participate in Anti-’ISIS’ Fight

In a clear alter from previous positions against Syria and its government, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Friday he could envisage Syrian government troops taking part in the fight to crush the "ISIS" terrorists.
In order to fight "ISIS," "there must be two measures: bombings... and ground troops who cannot be ours, but who should be of "the opposition Free Syrian Army", Sunni Arab forces, and why not government forces too," Fabius told RTL radio.
He further added that "the main military target remains Raqa, the Syrian city that is the stronghold of "ISIS."
"For us it is one of the main military targets, even the main one, because it is the nerve center of Daesh, and the attacks against France were planned from there," Fabius said, using another name for "ISIS".
According to the minister, Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked France to draw up a map of where groups fighting "ISIS" militants operate in Syria in order not to bomb them.
"He asked us to draw up a map of forces that are not terrorists and are fighting Daesh [ISIS]. He committed to not bombing them once we've provided that," Fabius said.
Fabius also said Paris could send Special Forces to Syria, but that any such decision would not be made public.
