Relatively, a local official said that: "The double attack occurred in the public school in the town of Kerawa," adding that "we have no more information on the situation."

Another source also confirmed the attack although the number of dead or wounded was not immediately known.

While there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, northern Cameroon became the scene of increasingly frequent suicide attacks as Boko Haram extremist militant group step up cross-border attacks that have also hit Chad and Niger.

For its part, one of the sources reported that the school in Kerawa had been housing Nigerian refugees.

In all, Boko Haram has killed thousands of people and driven more than two million people from their homes during its six-year insurgency in one of the world's poorest regions.
