Death Toll Hits 64 in Karabakh Clashes

Relatively, Azerbaijan's defense ministry said 16 of its soldiers had been killed over the last two days.

According to estimates based on official reports, the death toll from both sides since the clashes in the Caucasus erupted on Friday is at least 64.

"Armenia continued firing at Azerbaijani army positions and civilian targets using large-caliber machineguns and 120-millimeter mortars," the ministry said in a statement as clashes entered their fourth day.

In addition, the defense ministry in Karabakh said that "Azerbaijan continued its aggression throughout the night."

"It used 'Smerch' heavy multiple rocket launcher system at the southern sector of the front," the ministry added.

Meanwhile, the energy-rich Azerbaijan, whose military spending exceeds Armenia's entire state budget, has repeatedly threatened to take back the breakaway region by force.
