"Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE accompanied by Civilian JTF successfully thwarted an attempt by Boko Haram terrorists on Yauri community at the outskirts of Maiduguri city, Borno State," said a statement by army spokesman Sani Usman.

During the incident, which took place Monday, five extremists were killed and a cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles and a machine gun, were recovered, he said.

With the help of regional forces, Nigerian troops recaptured a range of territories and driven the insurgents into remote areas in the Lake Chad region.

Boko Haram, which seeks to impose strict so-called "Islamic" law in northern Nigeria, has killed some 20,000 and displaced more than 2.6 million people since 2009.
