"Israeli" Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz told the Winograd Committee investigating the Second Lebanon War that every time he tried to intervene in order to influence the course of the war, his advice was rejected and criticized.
According to testimony released Tuesday, Mofaz told the committee that it was not his job to be in charge of government decisions. Mofaz also maintained that after the capturing of the two "Israeli" soldiers on July 12, he recommended severely pounding Hizbullah for a couple of weeks, and not "for a day or two."
"I supported the following things: First of all, to act against the Katyusha rockets; I thought it was right to act that same night and strike Hizbullah targets and Lebanese infrastructure, without harming civilians," Mofaz said.
In the coming weeks the members of the Winograd Committee are expected to decide whether to send out warning letters to Olmert, Defense (War) Minister Amir Peretz, former chief of staff Dan Halutz, and other top officials for their role in the war's failures.
