The memorandum of understanding between Hizbullah and major Salafist powers in Lebanon was lauded by key political and religious figures in the country.
The document was signed by the head of Hizbullah's politburo Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyed and Sheikh Dr. Hassan Shahhal who heads the Belief and Justice Movement (BJM).
"We have found in this understanding a fresh and dear bid to silence the destructive sedition that threatens our society and we hope that it be given a full chance," former Prime Minister Salim Hoss said.
For it part, the Muslim Scholars Association (MSA), marking its 27th anniversary, welcomed the understanding and called for more unity among Muslims across the world. "Sedition is the work of the US and "Israel" who are working against Islam," Sheikh Ahmed Zein, the head of the Association's board of trustees, said. For his part, the head of the MSA administrative board, Hassan Abdullah, stressed the Association's "support to the resistance and fighting away sedition on the road to Islamic unity and national unity."
In an interview with New TV, Future Movement MP Mustafa Allouch said that the real problem with Hizbullah was political, not ideological.
He added that the Future Movement will not participate in the memorandum of understanding, but it will not obstruct it either.
In Egypt, the general guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohammed Mahdi Akif, denied on Tuesday that his group had interfered in the Hizbullah-Salafist MOU signed on Monday.
He told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the Muslim Brotherhood supported and blessed the memorandum, adding that Hizbullah did not need to improve its image outside Lebanon, as some have claimed.
