Hizbullah expressed its "great appreciation to the courage of Dr. Sheikh Hassan al-Shahhal," the Salafist leader who signed the memorandum of understanding with the group on Monday but later reneged.
Hizbullah said in a press release on Wednesday that it was aware of the "tremendous pressure exerted on Shahhal," adding, "We respect [the Salafists'] choice of freezing the memorandum of understanding for more discussions and revisions. They will find Hizbullah is always by their side in any decision they find appropriate."
"All of the positive support to the Hizbullah-Salafist MOU revealed its importance in enhancing dialogue between different Islamic and national forces and in facing challenges."
The Hizbullah statement also noted, "We also heard severe criticism [of the MOU] from some leaders despite the fact that its content is nonnegotiable to any Muslim."
