Less than one month on his appointment as Army Commander, General Jean Kahwaji was face to face with the first assassination attack after the Doha agreement, that saw the killing of Lebanese Democratic Party senior official Saleh Aridi.
Kahwaji said the crime was a "blood-soaked message" to all the Lebanese without exception. "Accordingly, their response must be up to the level of danger," he noted, calling for adherence to unity, dialogue, reconciliation, security and peace. He also urged the various factions to proceed with reconciliation to safeguard the nation's stability.
Speaking to Lebanese daily As-Safir hours ahead of starting a tour across Lebanon, Kahwaji said it was time to revive the military institution and give it priority in discussions over the state's financial policies. The army commander added that the army would not shun its responsibilities and that he personally would not spare any effort to consolidate the army with soldiers, equipments and training, which he said would benefit all Lebanese.
Kahwaji, whose eyes were still set towards south Lebanon, addressed the soldiers deployed in that region, calling them to confront the "Israeli" enemy and stick to the spirit of the Resistance against all those who want to trespass Lebanon and its people's safety. "There is an enemy that ambushes the whole country from our southern frontiers. It is reminding us, through its practices, violations, and decades-long greed that it was and will continue to be our first enemy," he added. The army commander called on the soldiers to be fully ready to face the dangers and preserve their loyalty to the nation.
