Akkar MP Mustafa Ali Hussein said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad expressed his desire to preserve Lebanon's unity and sovereignty. Hussein said that Assad also supported Hizbullah until Lebanese territory was completely liberated.
After meeting with Assad in Damascus on Tuesday, Hussein said, "Assad stressed that Lebanon's security and stability are related to Syria's security and stability, and that any threat to Lebanon is a threat to Syria. Syria, the state and population, wants the best brotherly relations with the Lebanese population, and it is keen to achieve the security and stability of the political situation in Lebanon."
Hussein reported Assad as saying that all those who wanted to ruin Lebanese-Syrian relations were "illusionists and wrong," adding that Syria was a comprehensive entity, and it would not be dragged into plots. Hussein said that Assad would keep Lebanon a subject of interest in order to achieve national reconciliation between Lebanese parties and to form a united front against the "Zionist enemy."
