UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been discharged from St Thomas' Hospital in central London, where he was admitted a week ago with persistent symptoms of COVID-19 after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

According to his office, Johnson will continue his recovery at Chequers Court – the prime minister's country house, as opposed to his London residence at 10 Downing Street.

On the advice of his medical team, he will not, for the time being, return to his duties as the country's prime minister, his spokesman added.

In a statement issued earlier Sunday, Johnson thanked the staff at the St Thomas' hospital and stressed that he owed his life to the NHS – Britain's National Healthcare System.

Earlier this week, Johnson left the intensive care unit at the hospital, where he spent several nights as his condition deteriorated.

While his office initially claimed that Johnson would stay at the helm while being under supervision at the hospital, later on in the week, he had to deputize Dominic Raab, UK Foreign Secretary.

In the meantime, the latest figures put the coronavirus death toll in the United Kingdom at 9,875, with a total of 78,991 confirmed infections.
