BEIRUT: "Israeli" warplanes on Tuesday violated a UN Security Council resolution, flying over Lebanon`s eastern mountain range near the border with Syria, the National News Agency (NNA) announced. The NNA said that six warplanes flew for 10 minutes over the eastern Lebanese range.
One witness quoted by Naharnet said that "Israeli" planes had covered areas over the towns of Mashgara, Sohmor and Yohmor, known to make up Hizbullah`s power triangle northeast of the Litani River.
NNN also said that an "Israeli" surveillance drone flew over the towns of Sharqiyeh, Doueir, Jibsheet and Harouf in the southern region of Nabatieh late on Monday evening.
UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended last year`s war with "Israel", stipulated that UN peacekeepers and the Lebanese Army should control the area south of the Litani River. But "Israel" has refused to stop violating Lebanese airspace as called for in the resolution, citing a need to gather intelligence on alleged arms smuggling.
Lebanon has deployed thousands of troops along its borders with Syria to enforce a ban imposed by Resolution 1701 on illegal shipments of weapons.
