Chinese authorities slapped a Wuhan-style full lockdown on the northeast city of Shulan, boasting a population of some 700,000 residents, the Guardian reported Tuesday.

Residential areas in the city are sealed off, and in every household, only one person is allowed to venture out for a couple of hours once every two days to shop for essentials, the paper added.

The city was reportedly re-classified as a high-risk area last week as a cluster of infections linked with a person without a travel history was found in its boundaries.

On Monday, Bloomberg reported that some 108 million people living in China's northeast are facing a return to the lockdown, with cities across the Jilin province -- which Shulan is part of -- cutting off public transport services and shuttering schools.

The agency said that tens of thousands have now been quarantined in the area as Beijing fears a second wave of COVID-19.
