Iran Denounces New US Sanctions as Assault on National Sovereignty

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned Washington’s announcement of new economic sanctions against Iran, saying the measures go beyond economic warfare and amount to an attempt by the United States to impose its authority beyond its own borders.

Baghaei said Washington was effectively asserting a form of extraterritorial sovereignty over independent UN member states, stressing that no country has the right to pressure foreign banks, companies, or airports into abandoning legitimate trade with another state.

He further argued that the sanctions violate the principle of sovereign equality enshrined in the UN Charter and breach the customary prohibition on intervention, citing the International Court of Justice’s ruling in the Nicaragua case.

Baghaei warned that the continued use of such coercive measures risks undermining sovereignty as a fundamental principle of the international system and further exposing Washington’s attempt to dictate the economic relations of independent states.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced what he described as the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY” against Iran, threatening unprecedented economic warfare and isolation while accusing Tehran of refusing to accept a deal.

Trump warned that countries allowing their financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide Iran with what he called a “lifeline” would face what he termed “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.”

He identified oil smuggling, financial transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies among the measures to be targeted.
